I'm actually on my way to class right now, but I started watching today's Tyra show, and right now she's talking about intersexed people and the preview for later in the episode, she's talking to a transman. I'm sure it'll be on hulu or something tomorrow if you're interested. it's interesting so far.

I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked |
] |
Three nights in a row, I've gone to bed and been unable to sleep. Not in a bad way. It's like my brain knows that all the fun's happening when I'm awake, so why bother with sleep? Last night I fell asleep relatviely quickly, but then I woke up at 3am and couldn't go back to sleep for ages. And Jenna's been staying over every night and leaving for work at 7am, so I wake up then and that's it. I tried just closing my eyes for a while, but I quickly got bored.
I had work for the first time yesterday, and again this afternoon. The kids were cracking me up. It's only been five months, but they've grown so much! It was tiring but good.
Is it Saturday yet?

little ETA for those of you who read my recap of windsor - i'm now told that the rubber chicken dave threw into the crowd was given to him by a fan during the show. it wasn't THE rubber chicken. LOL. just thought i should clear that up.

Tegan and Sara - On Directing |
] |
Right. Just wow. It was so so good, and I apologise for the following self-indulgent squee I'm about to go on. ;D
First off, here's the set list if anyone is interested:
( Set List )
This was my first T&S gig and it was really something special. You can watch as many YouTube videos as you like, but it's nothing compared to actually seeing them live. I was really blown away. Musically, they were tight and I don't think there were any mistakes last night - except when Tegan stopped near the end of Night Watch to break up a fight; and when some guy kept shouting stuff at her as she was trying to start Call It Off. So, I'd say they were near perfect musically.
After reading big_trend 's thoughts on the Shepard's Bush and Manchester gigs, I was a little bit worried about how on form they would be in terms of banter and anecdotes, but I wasn't disappointed. Tegan was hilarious, as I'd expected she would be, and I felt really bad for Sara at one point cos of some dipstick who kept shouting "BALLS!" when she was trying to talk. (Arsehole .... /rage.) It was to the point where Tegan actually told him off. After that, Sara didn't seem as open to sharing and talking as much as I'd hoped she would. She just seemed quite shy. However, I was right in front of her on the barrier, so I don't mind. At least I could see her.
In terms of what songs they played, ( in case people don't want to see set lists yet )
I suppose the only really big gripe I have is the crowd. In terms of crowd atmosphere, that has to be one of the worst gigs I've been too. I know I took a few pictures and videos, but it was like everyone was just there to stand, take photos and oogle a bit, and sing. There was no movement in the faster songs, I was thinking the whole time, "Why is there no dancing?!" I've been to loads of gigs, but never a T&S before last night, so I had no idea what the crowd would be like, but I really thought there would be a bit more energy. /rant over.
Anyway, despite those little niggles, it was a really good gig. The two of them were everything I hoped, and it's true, they really are prettier in the flesh. (: I still can't get over how little they are.
How did everyone else find last night?!
EDIT: Tegan playing Northshore - is that not the cutest thing ever?! I loved how excited and into the song she got. (:

| NO WOJO4HITZ VIDEOS |
[16 Nov 2009|08:07pm] |
I don't know how many people here rely heavily on wojo4hitz/Jaime's videos for their daily T&S fix, but i definitely do. Her channel's freaking bookmarked on my computer. Honestly, nothing comes close to the picture/audio quality of her videos. Not to mention her EXTENSIVE T&S archive. One down-side of European tours is that she can't afford to go all the way to places outside the US or Canada.
So here's my request: can someone tell me if they've found acceptable videos of the ongoing European shows?
Thanks!

| o canada |
[15 Nov 2009|08:25pm] |
just got back from my little jaunt to canada to see david cook (and do some work, but that was pretty secondary, LOL). i still need to post my pictures from phoenix, but i want to recap this one while it's fresh in my mind because there was quite a bit of humor to it. also, the pictures from this show aren't all that great, because i was in the 6th row (which was essentially the 10th row), so i'm in no hurry to edit those. anyway...
( and you stole my soul to set me free... )
geez, that was long. one day i will learn to write short recaps. today is not that day.
i may have to give in and turn on my heater. it's colder in vegas tonight than it was in canada last night. what's wrong with that picture??

| Thoughts on the Shepherd's Bush Empire & Manchester Academy 2 gigs |
[15 Nov 2009|03:40pm] |
Epic, self-indulgent post, feel free to ignore.
Want to start off by saying that I've seen Tegan & Sara play about 10 or 12 times in London and southern England since the first time I saw them at the Camden Barfly in 2005. I'm 32, and try to go to as many of their shows as I can whilst not being a fangirl stalker. Which normally means all the London ones, plus those in striking distance. If I was 15 years younger I would be following them around the country but I am a bit too old for that nowadays.
( O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire, Fri 13th November ) ( Manchester Academy 2, Sat 14th November ) ========
The main reason why I guess it upsets me to feel like they don't really love the British audience is because I am so attached to them as people as well as artists. We all feel like we know them, and that they should be our best friends because of the banter and the videos and how much they've let us into their own personal lives. But I have a much deeper attachment to them that goes way beyond my enormous crush on them as people, and I think it's in essence a political one.
When I was 16 my favourite band was The Smiths. They are still my favourite band of all time, probably, but the reason I was attached to them as a teenager was because Morrissey's sexual ambiguity was so queer, and it made it easier for me, as a nascent lesbian, to feel not just ok about being gay but actually COOL FOR BEING GAY. What was frustrating to me, and still is, is that Morrissey would never come out but only flirt with homoerotic imagery; Brett Anderson from Suede and other Britpop artists - they were all about the cachet that androgyny and ambiguity bestowed on them but they never put their money where their mouth was. La Roux is doing the same thing in 2009 and it makes me furious.
Why I love Tegan & Sara so much, in addition to the amazing music that they make, is their out-ness. It means so much to me that they combine being amazing musicians and popstars with being out gays. For Sara to stand on stage at Shepherd's Bush Empire on Friday and say matter-of-factly while telling an anecdote, "oh I should say before I start that I am gigantically queer..." I have seen upwards of 30 gigs at Shepherd's Bush Empire, normally sharing space with beery men talking all the way through it and occasionally their girlfriends. It will never cease to bring me close to tears to hear Sara say this, surrounded by young lesbians who are having their minds blown at that very instant by the queerness of the moment and the proximity of so many girls like them, girls who might be theirs... It means so much to me that Tegan & Sara are prepared to take this stand. God knows their career has not taken off as it might otherwise have done if they were not feminists and out lesbians. I just want to thank them so much for it.
I've done ok, but I wish I had had Tegan & Sara when I was 16.

A radio station in Edmonton interviewed Sara last week. It's pretty long, but it's funny. Ewan McGregor is a fan of the band =)

Freezing in Fressin |

To the people who went to the gig on Friday night, were there any songs that really surprised you? Like you thought they were much better live than you had thought they'd be?
Personally I thought Hell was really good, and I'd go as far as saying that Hell is in my least favourite 3 on the album. Sentimental Tune and Paperback Head were my favourites of the night, by far.

I finished placement. I was actually a bit sad. I went to the pub next to Westmead station with my two friends from placement on my last day. We got chatted up by a bunch of fifty year old men. It was uncomfortable. I'm really going to miss seeing them each day. They really made placement a good time for me. It's going to be weird not going in on Tuesday.
I'm back to work tomorrow, and working on my final essay this week, which is due on Friday. I've been doing as much driving as I can. Today is Glebe Fair! I'm in Greenwich at the moment but I have to head now because we're leaving.
Also, I think something excellent is happening in my life right now. But I don't want to jinx it.

Every now and then, the AOL home page has an interesting story on it. Today, it brought me this: a story about a little old lady that used to be a little old man. I found it... well, cute, to be honest.
